Euro Candidates Guide

European Parliamentary Election Candidates North West of England
So...Where do they all stand on Unconventional Gas?

The European Parliamentary Elections

Thursday 22nd may 2014

The System:

  • The ‘North West’ constituency for the European Parliament consists of Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside.

  • We have 8 MEPs.

  • Constituents vote for a party rather than an individual.
  • Parties put their candidates in a ranked order. The party then receives seats according to their percentage of the overall vote with candidates getting seats in order of their ranked position.

The current make up
of our constituency is:

Your vote can really count!
Labour: 2
Conservative: 3
Lib Dem: 1
BNP: 1
If you plan to vote according to who will best represent your views on Unconventional Gas in the UK please read the following:

75 North West of England constituency candidates for the European Parliamentary elections were contacted, through their parties or individually, by members of the Frack Free Upton lobbying group and asked for their stance on test drilling and extraction of Unconventional Gas in the UK (including coalbed methane and shale gas).

  • We had replies from one Liberal Democrat, one English Democrat and one UKIP candidate who were all IN FAVOUR of Unconventional Gas in the UK.

  • We had NO responses from any other candidates except for the Green party.

  • All Green Party candidates have promised to reject test drilling and extraction of Unconventional Gas and promote this view point in Europe.

  • All the other major parties are in favour of unconventional gas test drilling and extraction to some degree.

  • Why so few responses from the ‘big parties’? Perhaps because they don’t want to admit their stance on UCG knowing the ground swell of feeling against it.

  • All candidates’ names and contact details are listed.
